Nomad eSIM Expired Early?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Why Does My Nomad eSIM Plan Expire Before the Expected Duration?

Nomad eSIM plans are designed to provide flexibility and connectivity, but sometimes users experience unexpected early expiration of their plans. Understanding the main triggers and how to manage your plan effectively can help you make the most of your eSIM.

Reasons Your Plan May Expire

Nomad eSIM plans expire under one of two conditions:

1. Data Allowance Fully Consumed

If your plan's data allocation is used up before the validity period ends, the plan will expire immediately. This is independent of the number of days remaining in the plan. Common causes for rapid data consumption include:

  • High-data activities such as streaming videos, video calls, or downloading large files.

  • Background processes like app updates, system backups, or automatic syncing (e.g., cloud uploads).

  • Use of VPNs or other data-intensive services.

For example, a 30-day plan with 3GB of data will expire as soon as all 3GB are used, even if there are several days left in the validity period. Similarly, a user with a 20GB 30-day plan may exhaust all the data within a few days due to unexpected high-data usage, such as iCloud uploads or streaming.

2. Plan Duration Ends

Even if you have unused data, a plan will expire once its validity period (e.g., 30 days, 90 days) has ended. For example, if a 30-day plan is activated on June 1, it will expire on July 1, regardless of how much data remains.

How to Monitor and Manage Your Plan

To avoid unexpected expiration and maximize your plan’s usage:

  1. Track Your Data Usage - Regularly check your data usage in the Nomad app. Monitor which apps consume the most data via your device settings.

  2. Minimize Background Data Consumption - Disable automatic updates and backups during your trip. Turn off background data access for non-essential apps.

  3. Choose a Plan That Fits Your Needs - Accurately estimate your expected data usage before selecting a plan. For example, frequent video streamers may require higher data allowances.

  4. Consider Top-Up Options - If available, add additional data to your plan to ensure uninterrupted connectivity.

  5. Verify Plan Validity Period - Ensure you activate your plan within the allowable activation window (e.g., 60 days from purchase). Once activated, the countdown starts, and the plan duration cannot be extended.

  6. Data usage notifications are sent to you via the app and the registered email address when your eSIM's data consumption reaches 60% and 80%.

Please note, DTAC Thailand plans' data usage cannot be monitored on the app or website as it is a special promotional plan. To check data usage for DTAC Thailand eSIMs, please dial *101*1*9# and to check voice minutes' balance, dial *101*9#

Understanding Notifications

Sometimes, you may receive messages indicating your eSIM has expired, even though your plan is still active. This could be due to:

  • A temporary glitch or incorrect notification.

  • Checking your current plan status in the Nomad app will clarify whether the plan is still valid and active.

Conclusion

Nomad eSIMs offer flexibility for travelers, but understanding the expiration conditions—data consumption and plan duration—can help you plan better, avoid interruptions, and make the most of your mobile connectivity. Always monitor your usage and adjust activity to match your plan’s data and duration limits.
