Does Nomad eSIM Activate automatically?

Updated over 2 months ago

How Does Nomad eSIM Activate Automatically, and What Steps Should I Follow to Ensure It Works?

The Nomad eSIM is designed to activate automatically when you arrive in your destination country and connect to a local mobile network. There is no need for additional manual activation before you arrive, making it a seamless process.

However, there are specific steps you should follow to ensure proper activation and functionality of your eSIM.

Automatic Activation Explained

  • The Nomad eSIM will activate only upon arrival in the designated coverage area. This means if you are traveling to Asia, Europe, or any other region, activation occurs automatically when your device connects to the local network in your destination.

  • Activation cannot occur (with exception of Thailand Unlimited plans) if you are outside the coverage region of your eSIM plan. If you are in transit or still in your home country, the eSIM will not function until you reach your designated area.

Steps to Ensure Proper Activation

Follow these steps to ensure your Nomad eSIM works reliably upon arrival:

  1. Turn On the eSIM: Locate the Nomad eSIM in your device’s settings and ensure it is enabled as an active line. Note: The eSIM may appear under a generic name, such as “Personal,” due to automatic device naming. Verify its ICCID matches your purchase to confirm you have selected the correct eSIM.

  2. Enable Data Roaming: Make sure that data roaming is turned on for the Nomad eSIM within your cellular settings. This step is crucial, as data roaming allows the eSIM to connect seamlessly to the network.

  3. Select eSIM as the Preferred Data Line: Configure the Nomad eSIM as the line for cellular data usage. This ensures all data activity is routed through your eSIM.

  4. Turn Off Other SIMs (Optional): If you have a physical SIM or another eSIM installed, consider turning off these lines to avoid interference.

  5. Activate Upon Arrival: Once you land in your destination country, follow the steps listed above to check that all settings are properly configured. No other manual activation should be necessary.

Special Scenarios

  • Future Travel: If your trip is scheduled for a later date for example, next month the activation process remains unchanged. Your eSIM will activate when it connects to a local network at the destination country or from 60 days of purchase (irrespective of the device being in the destination country or not); which ever comes first.

By following these guidelines, you can rest assured that your Nomad eSIM will activate seamlessly and provide the connectivity you need during your travels.
