Why does my phone's data usage not match the Nomad app's eSIM plan usage report?

Understanding Data Discrepancies Between Your Phone and the Nomad App

When using the Nomad eSIM, you might notice differences between the data usage reported by your phone’s system and the Nomad app. These discrepancies can be confusing, but they arise from several factors, ranging from tracking delays to device-specific settings. Here, we explore the reasons behind these mismatches and provide solutions to ensure you get accurate usage information.

Causes of Discrepancies

1. Tracking Delays in the Nomad App

While realtime, there may be a small delay before the app reflects your most recent data consumption. Restarting the app can help refresh this information.

2. Different Measurement Methods

Your phone and the Nomad app calculate data usage differently. The Nomad app relies on the carrier’s records, which include additional factors such as data overhead and network-level measurements. This method is more accurate as it reflects the official usage on your plan. In contrast, your phone’s counter may exclude or estimate certain types of data usage.

3. Device-Specific Features and Settings

Some device features can create unexpected data usage:

  • Wi-Fi Assist (iOS): This feature switches your phone to cellular data when your Wi-Fi signal is weak.

  • Background Activities: Automatic app updates, cloud syncing, and background tasks on both Android and iOS can consume data without your immediate knowledge.

  • Data Thresholds on Android: On Android, your device may set data usage alerts or limits (e.g., showing 2GB even when your Nomad plan provides 10GB). Changing these thresholds in your phone’s settings can prevent confusion. This is only an alert mechanism and doesn't restrict data usage.

Data Usage Upon Activation

If your eSIM plan shows reduced data immediately after activation (e.g., a 3GB plan showing only 2GB remaining), it’s because data usage begins as soon as the plan is activated. Background processes, such as app updates, map caching, or cloud syncing, may consume data automatically. To check your current balance, open the Nomad app, go to Manage > [Your Plan], or log into the Nomad website and navigate to Manage Plans.

Troubleshooting Steps

Follow these steps to resolve data usage discrepancies:

  1. Restart the Nomad App: This refreshes the data usage information displayed.

  2. Cross-Check Device Settings: Compare the Nomad app’s data usage report with your device’s usage breakdown for trends.

  3. Adjust Device Settings: Disable features like Wi-Fi Assist if unnecessary. Review and limit background activity for apps. Adjust data usage thresholds or alerts to match your Nomad plan.

  4. Ensure the Correct Data Line is Active: If you have multiple data lines (e.g., Google Fi), verify that your phone is set to use the Nomad eSIM for data. Rely on the Nomad app for Nomad-specific usage reports.
