eSIM Not Activating After Installation?

Installed Nomad eSIM but not activated? Arrive at destination, enable data roaming, and learn what to check to complete activation.

Updated this week

In most cases, the eSIM can only be activated/started when you have arrived at your destination. If you have not arrived at your destination, then it is normal to see that your eSIM has not been activated/started, even if you have completed your installation process.

It is important to note that adding an eSIM to your device, known as installation, is separate from the activation process. Activation typically requires connecting to a local network at your destination after ensuring all relevant settings, such as data roaming, are enabled.

Common Reasons for Activation Delays

  1. Latency in Updating Activation Status:

    • The Nomad app may take some time to reflect the eSIM activation status after the process is complete, especially upon arrival at the destination.

  2. Delay in Network Recognition:

    • Activation might not occur until your device connects to a supported network with data roaming enabled.

  3. Overlap Between Plans:

    • Sometimes a delay in switching between trial and purchased eSIMs can cause confusion. Ensure the correct eSIM is set as the mobile data line.

For more information on how to activate/start your eSIM, please refer to this article.

The eSIM status can sometimes take a few minutes to update on your Nomad app. If you are already at your destination, your eSIM is turned on, and data roaming is turned on, but your Nomad app still shows that the eSIM is not activated, please refresh your Manage page and check again in a few minutes.

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Basic Verification:

  • Ensure the eSIM is activated and data roaming is turned on in your settings.

  • Confirm the eSIM is selected as the default line for mobile data.

Advanced Troubleshooting

If basic steps fail:

  • Turn airplane mode on and off, or restart your device.

  • Manually disable automatic network selection and connect to a supported provider.

  • Update your device’s APN settings as provided here. If the issue persists, contact Nomad support with screenshots of your eSIM settings for further help.

Important Warnings

  • Never Delete an Active eSIM:

    • Deleting an active eSIM may invalidate it, preventing restoration. Carefully verify settings and troubleshoot before considering deletion.
